Go see Citizens Advise with your paperwork (you will need to make an appointment - if you turn up hoping to 'walk in', chances are, unless you are in the first half dozen in the queue, half an hour before they open, you will have a wasted morning).

Generally :-

if it was YOUR mistake (you failed to tell them) then it's unlikely they will 'back date' any claim and, indeed, chances are you will have to pay back any overpayment (although they will give you time to pay, the courts are not sympathetic towards people who are seen as attempting to defraud the system)

if it was THEIR mistake, then you will get anything owed (although you have to fight for it) ..

If it was their mistake and they overpaid you, they will still try to get money back .. however you can plead poverty and, so long as you make them some offer to pay back (at, say, 50p a week :-) ) they won't take you to court ..
