I wish to appeal against a tax credit bill, but don't know how to word the sending letter, any advice please ?

Ive been landed with a huge tax repayment bill from the tax credit agency for four years of over payments, (so they say) %26amp; i disagree. everything i told them was true %26amp; correct at the time of application, i held nothing back. Surely its a mistake on there behalf %26amp; so therefore i should'nt be penalised or held accountable.I was told after the 1st year that i had been over paid %26amp; had to re-apply in order to qualify for the credit so they could take the over payment back from that credit awarded.

But now 4 years worth has landed on my doorstep %26amp; i think something should be done about it , but i'm not sure how to word an appealing letter. Anyone who possibly has any legal experience in this type of matter, your advice would be greatly appreciated or even if this has happened to you %26amp; have some sound advice, please let me know . Many thanks. Tone D.

Having dealt with Tax authorities in a few different countries I find that they can be reasonable when you stay calm with them.

I would recommend a simple letter that explains the error and considers your current financial position. Reread it a few times to ensure that you have taken the emotion out of the letter and have simply explained the facts and circumstances. I would then ask them for any leniency or alternative payment plans which you may qualify for or that may be available.

The person reading the letter will appreciate the calm tone, and will likely offer any assistance which they can provide.
