Hi all,
I desperately need to file my taxes because my refund is financing the majority of my maternity leave. My daughter was born on December 18, and I have not received her social security card yet. Can I claim her without it?
The social security office says it can take 13 weeks to get the card - is there a way to get her number before the card arrives?
Thanks in advance.
Tax credit for a child born in December (No social security number)?
If you file your taxes without the child's social security number your claim for her exemption will be disallowed. You can eithe file now without claiming her and then amend your return when you get her number or wait until you get her number and file.
Reply:the social security administration near me will give a print out with the social security number and your childs name on it, that is just as good as the actual card. maybe you should ask them about that. And yes you can claim your daughter on 2007 taxes because she was born before december 31.
Reply:I believe that once you have applied for it, you can just put "applied for" on your tax return in place of the social security number. I do not know of a way to get your new daughter's social security number before they actually issue you the card. I believe you just have to wait for it but the IRS knows it takes awhile so it should not be an issue.
You can DEFINITELY claim your daughter since she was born before Dec 31st of 2007!
Reply:You need to talk to a tax person. I'm not sure you will qualify for the child tax credit this yr. beings you only cared for the baby for 2 weeks or so before yrs. end. I believe that in order to get the child tax credit that you have to have had the baby for 6 month in a yr. Reason being, is that this credit is given because of the expenses a parent pays for a child. I would ask before you try to claim, cause you could get audited. If it turns out you qualify, then you will most likely have to wait until you get the ss card in the mail.
Reply:You must have a social security number to claim your daughter.
So, you have two options, you can go ahead and file without claiming your daughter and then amend the return once you receive her SS #.
Or you can wait until you receive the SS# and then file.
Reply:Yes, you can make a note in the line where you would enter the SS #.
And you can claim the exemption and credit this ear for any child born before 12/31. For a child not born in the year, you would have to have provided support for 6 months, not the case with children born IN the year.
I am not sure about the SS#, but if you go to the office, you may be able to get it.
Reply:Maalru3 needs to stay out of tax questions because they know nothing about taxes.
YES YOU CAN CLAIM YOUR BABY
