Is it true that you can claim a one time Federal excise tax credit in 2006 due to a rebate of telephone tax?

I was told by a friend at work that it will be on line 71 of this year's tax return.

Is it true that you can claim a one time Federal excise tax credit in 2006 due to a rebate of telephone tax?

Refund for Long-distance Calls

Taxpayers can figure their refund by using their telephone bills to calculate how much they paid in eligible excise tax between Feb. 28, 2003 and Aug. 1, 2006. Or, taxpayers can claim a standard amount refund based on the number of personal exemptions they've paid ($30 for one exemption, $40 for two, $50 for three and $60 for four or more, according to CCH).

If you claim the actual amount of tax you paid, you'll need to file a Form 8913. Otherwise, you can claim your refund on Form 1040. And taxpayers who aren't required to file a tax return can claim their telephone excise tax refund by using the new Form 1040EZ-T to claim a standard refund.
Reply:Yes you can, but you must show some sort of proof, like home phone bills where you call long distance somewhere.
Reply:Yes. It ranges from $30 to $60 depending on household size. It's on line 71 for form 1040, but is also on 1040A and 1040EZ in the payments section - you fill in the correct number for your household size.

If you aren't filing a return but qualify for the credit since you had a phone in your name, then you can file a form 1040EZ-T to just get the credit. DO NOT file a return, and also a 1040EZ-T.
Reply:Yes, that is true. If you are NOT required to file a return and you had a telephone from March 1993 on, then you need to go to the library and pick up a 1040T. Just put you Social security #, Name Address and any dependents you have and check the box that asks if you had a phone when the bill took effect. If you are filing taxes anyway, check the box on the back of the 1040 which applies to the Federal Excise Tax Credit. This is a one time credit and it is $30 for 1 person (yourself) $40 for 2, $50 for 3 and a maximum of $60 for 4. Let everyone know about this, especially the elderly that wouldn't normally file taxes.
Reply:YES IT IS TRUE!!!
Reply:It is true. This tax was paying for the expenses of the spanish american war of 1898. It was never removed from the books. And our phone bills have been paying for it for ever. Thank your Republican senators and representatives for removing it. The democrats wanted to increase it about 1973.
Reply:yes. not a lot of money, but every little bit helps.
Reply:it is true ..but by claiming the credit your chances of being audited are very good....they will make you produce your bills..
